New serviced apartments proposed in Brighton

BRIGHTON could soon have 56 new serviced apartments to offer visitors.

Developers have applied to the council to build a new boutique style apart-hotel with 56 self contained apartments.

The Light Queen Square is being proposed by Stonehurst Properties who already operate The Light in Manchester.

The six storey building would predominately offer guests one-bedroom apartments with a small number of two-bed apartments and have a ground floor restaurant.

Plans were initially submitted earlier this year after being withdrawn and amended after local concerns were raised. The architects behind the scheme are Brighton-based Conran and Partners.

Brighton and Hove council is currently considering the application, which will require the demolition of a former ice rink to proceed.

London has a new royal borough

Royal Greenwich - Greenwich Fireworks

A NEW royal borough was created in London last week when Greenwich joined the elite club.

The honour was bestowed on the borough in south east London in recognition of his history of royal patronage. It is the first borough to be recognised in this way for over 80 years and joins Kingston, Kensington & Chelsea and Windsor & Maidenhead.

Greenwich’s council leader, Chris Roberts, and mayor travelled to Westminster to collect the Royal Charter which confirmed their royal status, and then kicked off a weekend of celebrations.

The Royal Borough of Greenwich, as it is now known, includes Greenwich, Eltham, Woolwich, Charlton, Plumstead and part of Thamesmead.

It is a big year for the borough as it is set to play host to several Olympic events, the reopening of the Cutty Sark and several anniversaries such as the National Maritime Museum’s 75th.

Next year London will get its first international cruise terminal when Enderby Wharf is developed in Greenwich.

Boat shows in 2011

There are two main boat shows held throughout the year and if you’re attending either, it’s always wise to sort out your accommodation well in advance.

London International Boat Show 2011

The London International Boat Show kicks off the year with a huge exhibition of all things marine related.  500 exhibitors will gather at London ExCel centre to show off their wares. The centre piece of the show will be a huge watersports pool, to be used for a wide range of activities from canoeing and kayaking to stand up paddle boarding, wakeboarding to dinghy sailing for children, plus canoe polo and model yacht racing. The latest developments in modern boating will be on show, as well as the chance to learn about traditional skills and techniques in the Classic Boat section.

The London International Boat Show runs from 7th – 16th January 2011.  Find serviced apartments in nearby Canary Wharf.

Southampton Boat Show 2011

The highpoint of the year for many, the Southampton Boat Show offers a fun filled day out of activities for anyone marine minded.  The full itinerary of 2011′s show is not yet available but the a high benchmark was set in 2010 when the MOD were in attendance and had HMS Dauntless on display. More info about the show will be added as and when it’s available.

Christmas at your home from home

Spending Christmas in a bland hotel could be quite an uninspiring affair but if you’re in a serviced apartment there’s no reason why you can’t make it a really special Christmas as if you were at home.

You’ll have the space to put up a Christmas tree and decorate the apartment with tinsel and Christmas cards.

One of the features of a serviced apartment which makes it a better choice for a lot of people than a conventional hotel is that you get your own kitchen – that means you can do your own Christmas dinner too.

The typical UK Christmas dinner includes, of course, roast turkey, stuffing, pigs in blankets, brussel sprouts, roast potatoes and cranberry sauce. For a Christmas dinner with more international flavour, have a look at this Wikipedia page which tells you how they serve it around the world.

Of course, if getting up early on Christmas Day morning to prepare your turkey doesn’t appeal to you why, why not check out pubs and restaurants in the nearby area that might be doing a seasonal special meal instead.

England misses out on World Cup bid

Football fans around the country were left disappointed today after FIFA handed the 2018 World Cup to Russia.

A series of strong presentations from the Prime Minster, David Cameron, HRH Prince William and David Beckham left many feeling hopeful this morning, but by the time FIFA’s executives’ votes were counted, England was out in the first round.

Potential host cities have been left disappointed by FIFA’s decision to overlook England’s bid. The cities that had been selected to host matches were:

FIFA executives awarded the 2022 World Cup to Qatar, beating off the challenge from the USA.

The failure to land the prestigious tournament is a huge blow to the tourism industry. It has been estimated that hosting the World Cup could boost the UK economy by as much as £3.2 billion.

Edinburgh’s Hogmanay 2010

Edinburgh’s Hogmanay celebration has garnered quite a reputation for being THE place to see in the New Year.

With just a month to go until the big night, we thought we would take a look at what they have planned for revellers this year.

The official Hogmanay Street Party starts at 9pm on New Year’s Eve, with live music and entertainment taking the assembled crowds all the way into 2011 with a fireworks spectacular at midnight.

The ‘Concert in the Gardens’, starting at 8pm and going through to 1am, features Biffy Clyro with special guests The Charlatans and Billy Bragg.

Later on New Year’s Day, KT Tunstall headlines and curates the ‘Resolution Concert’ with guests including Kassidy and King Creosote.
